BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN UNIVERSITY AND THE MEDIA
Im in words, made of words, others words.
(Beckett, The Unnamable)
What is Crystal Clear Creators and what does it do?
History of Crystal Clear Creators
CCCs origins date back to late 2001, and the production of a radio drama at Loughborough Campus Radio. In 2003, Robin Webber-Jones and myself decided to set up an organisation which would provide a middle ground between the lone writer and the huge institutions of the media. CCC was officially launched at Loughborough University in March 2004, after receiving a start-up grant from Arts Council England.
1.2 Peculiar structure of Crystal Clear Creators
CCC is not a conventional agency, because it is a not-for-profit organisation and company limited by guarantee run by its members; and it isnt a conventional production company, because it seeks to help and develop new talent. It fills the gap between the beginning writer and the threshold for acceptance by a literary agent, publisher or commercial company. CCC aims to help writers improve to the point that theyre publishable or broadcastable.
Basic aims of Crystal Clear Creators
In the long term, these include:
Obtaining a place on the list of independent producers commissioned by the BBC (particularly Radio 4).
Obtaining an R.S.L. (Restricted Service Licence) so we can set up a short-term radio station and broadcast spoken word material.
Obtaining as many broadcasts and relevant opportunities for our members as possible.
Basic description of Crystal Clear Creators
Crystal Clear Creators (www.crystalclearcreators.org.uk) is a not-for-profit arts organisation and company limited by guarantee which develops, records, produces and promotes new talent, including writers, actors and engineers, particularly for radio. It has almost 100 members. It works with new and up-and-coming writers, developing and recording poetry, prose, serials and plays and showcasing them on its website. It runs live events, in which writers get the chance to perform their work to an audience. It runs courses and dayschools, in which writers and young people interested in writing and the media have the opportunity to work with and learn from professionals, be they established writers, journalists, radio presenters, engineers and so on. It has had work broadcast on many radio stations, including Resonance FM, Loughborough Campus Radio, Carillon Radio, Takeover Radio, Heat FM, Virtually American, BBC Leicester, Oneword (forthcoming) and others. It runs a publishing arm, which has so far published one anthology of stories and poetry, and is now planning its next. It is funded by Arts Council England, AOL, Awards for All, Astra Zeneca/Charnwood Arts, Ernest Cook, Riverside Midlands, Loughborough University Development Trust, C.I.B.S. and others.
What is the relationship between Crystal Clear Creators and the university?
A word after a word
after a word is power.
(Margaret Atwood, Spelling)
Funding imperatives
Many arts funders will not fund university students directly, so Crystal Clear Creators necessarily bridges the gap between the university and the community.
Connections with the university
Crystal Clear Creators draws on resources in the university, including (where relevant) drama space, recording studios, Loughborough Campus Radio, the Arts Centre publicity mechanisms. Conversely, the university draws on technical and other resources of Crystal Clear Creators. CCC works with students from across the campus and all departments. It is connected to the M.A. in Creative Writing and the undergraduate module, Writing Aloud.
Educational opportunities
All my life Ive looked at words as though I were seeing them for the first time.
(Ernest Hemingway).
3.1 Examples of training events CCC has run include:
Creative writing dayschools
Sound engineering training
Introducing Media dayschools
Creative writing evening classes
Acting dayschools
3.2 Depending on subject, these courses aim to:
give students the opportunity to meet with writers of all ages from the community, in a relaxed and friendly environment.
provide a context in which students are actively encouraged to develop and produce new writing.
provide a context in which students can receive feedback from established writers, as well as from peers.
give students the opportunity to learn from professionals in a particular area.
give students the opportunity to learn practical and career skills which are not taught on their courses elsewhere.
give students the chance to learn from professionals in various areas how they developed their own careers.
provide some students (e.g. Ph.D Creative Writing students) the opportunity to teach their first workshops.
give students the chance to develop and enhance their existing skills further.
3.3 These courses also aim to:
mediate the gap between academic courses and the demands of the wider arts world.
Creative development
Poetry (Auden on Yeats) is a mouth.
(Peter Whigam, Dont Ask Me What I Mean).
Learning by doing
In terms of our recording work, the process is often as follows:
a member submits work for consideration
one of the mentors or editors reads it and feeds back to the writer
the member rewrites and resubmits it according to the suggestions set out by the mentor
the recording and editing processes take place
the piece is uploaded onto the website
Gaining credits
At the very least, all of the opportunities should give the people involved a credit for their c.v.s or covering letters.
4.3 More generally, though
More generally, though, the very experience of being involved in these activities should be beneficial to students. They get hands-on, practical experience of the recording and production process. Working in a team is also beneficial for the isolated writer.
4.4 The importance of end-points
All the members see an end-point for their work, via the website.
Conclusion
CCC is run by its members, so members gain experience of running an enterprise like this.
